Between September 27 and 29, 2023, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism conducted a safety audit of Okayama Electric Railway Co., Ltd. (corporate number 6260001001189), headquartered in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture. The audit revealed that the company had not conducted inspections of sidings (excluding switches) as required by Railway Maintenance Guidelines Article 102, Paragraph 1, and that the measured track gauge in sidings exceeded the maintenance standards specified in Article 13 of the same guidelines. Additionally, inspections of track components for the main line switches and sidings, as stipulated in Article 98 of the guidelines, had not been performed. The company is instructed to ensure that regular track inspections are carried out according to the classification of inspections specified in Article 98, and to take prompt corrective actions based on inspection results. Furthermore, the company must provide necessary training to facility managers and staff responsible for track maintenance and strengthen its internal maintenance management system. The company is required to report on the corrective measures taken by April 1, 2024. This enforcement action is classified as administrative guidance under the Railway Act and was issued on March 1, 2024.
